Factored Goods

The rug designer Marian Pepler began to work for the company as a designer and buyer of factored goods in 1933 taking over from Gordon Russell's wife who had established the furnishing side of the business in the 20s. As well as being responsible for designing rugs and carpets for Gordon Russell Ltd, Pepler brought in fabrics designed specially by various artists and textiles from a number of wholesalers among which Wardles, Donald Brothers and the Old Bleach Linen Company all supplied. Nikolous Pevsner later became chief buyer in 1936 and oversaw the import of bent plywood chairs by German born Thonet, Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer, and a range of furniture designs by the Danish architect Alvar Aalto.
