Cupboards

In many ways cabinets and cupboards share a common purpose in providing storage. Gordon Russell`s early designs very often combined cupboards and drawers, all, with one significant exception, were in the style of the Arts & Crafts movement. In 1925 Gordon designed the `boot cupboard` made in Cuban mahogany with veneered blockboard doors. At the time it represented a complete break with the firm's established image and in many ways it was a foretaste of the 1950s. The Architectural historian, Nikolaus Pevsner, revealed Russell's explanation that he was guided by certain 18th century precedents.
