Contract Interiors

Gordon Russell's first large order of a commercial nature was to supply chairs and desks to Bolton School in 1927. These continued to be supplied well into the thirties as well as receiving further commissions for other various schools in England. Company notebooks from the thirties list the wide contract client base that drew upon Gordon Russell's expertise for furnishing interiors. One of the most notable pre-war interior schemes was that of the Leicester Electricity showrooms. The entrance comprised two double sided settees, recessed panelled walls and showcases all of which was lit with an impressive scheme throughout.

During the Post-War years Gordon Russell's client base grew further and the company carried out work for a number of firms including Hardy Spicer Ltd., J. S. White, Wadkin Ltd. and C. R. Casson Ltd. Public buildings included work on a number of universities and civic centres. The dining hall at St Catherine's College, Oxford designed by architect Arne Jacobsen was manufactured by Gordon Russell in 1963, in the same year as Gordon Russell designers worked on Stratford's newly built Shakespeare Centre. Under the direction of architect Ray Leigh, who joined the company as Design Director in 1967, the company headed towards a period of design led expansion furthering its already existing European, American, Middle East and later Japanese markets.
