Martin Hall

b. 1943
Studied furniture design and manufacture at Newcastle-upon-Tyne School of Industrial Design 1953-1963. A great source of inspiration at this time was the emerging Scandinavian design culture which is still relevant today.
Tutored by Brian Braithwaite who himseld had trained with Stanley Davies in Windermere, providing a link to Gimson and the Ars and Crafts Movement. This too became a lifetime interest.
Ambition to work with Gordon Russell Ltd. was fulfilled in 1964 after a brief time in Bury, Lancs. working for John Higgin Ltd.
1964-1972 design draughtsman with Gordon Russell Ltd working in the drawing office under the management of W.H. (Curly) Russell, until becoming chief designer for Gordon Russell Contracts. This lasted until change of company ownership.
1987 set up own workshop and design office in Willersey, Gloucestershire, working with various clients, and in particular the Lutyens family, recreating and reproducing the work of Sir Edwin Lutyens in India and the UK.
2000 ceased commercial workshop and relocated to Cumbria to continue freelance work.
2007 returned to Broadway where he maintains a small design decility.
