Radio Cabinets

Cabinets for radios were first produced by the company in 1931. The opportunity had come about after Frank Murphy telephoned Gordon Russell to discuss the future direction of cabinet design for Murphy Radio. Gordon was well aware of current problems in the industry and after a meeting in Broadway with Murphy he agreed to collaborate on future designs. Straight away Gordon enlisting his brother Dick's design skills to find a solution to housing the wireless set and maintained 'the design of the cabinet ought to start when you design the set, not as an afterthought.' The company went on to produce radio cabinets for Pye, Ultra, Ekco and in 1935, a factory at Park Royal, was built to cope with growing demand. At its height 800 people were employed at Park Royal with production reaching over 100,000 sets a year.
