Chairs

The range of chairs and seating made by the firm over a period of 60 years was enormous. The early production, entirely designed by Gordon Russell, was undoubtedly influenced by Ernest Gimson and the Barnsleys. Although principally made for the domestic market, large scale contracts also featured, as in 1928 when the workshops made 2,000 for Bolton Boys' School in Lancashire. In the thirties there was a move towards Modernism and the involvement of other designers, including Dick Russell. Over the years many prestigious contracts followed, both for standard and specially designed chairs. A notable order in the post war period was for 2,000 chairs, designed by Dick Russell, for the newly rebuilt Coventry Cathedral. The chairs, or variants, are also in Chichester and Winchester Cathedrals, and subsequently the chair was sold worldwide. In the later years unit upholstered seating complemented the extensive range of dining and conference chairs.
