Holly

Holly wood is white in colour and has an exceedingly close-grained texture which gives a very smooth and hard surface when worked. Being the whitest of timbers, Holly is chiefly valued for inlay work, but it has also been used very successfully as facings on cabinet making structures.
The beautiful greenish-brown wood of the Laburnum together with its interesting grain structure makes it very suitable for the smaller work of turnery, inlay and handles used in cabinet making. It has also been used as decorative facings in cabinet work in the form of “oysters”. These are thin pieces obtained by cutting a cross section through a small log at right angles to its growth.
In colour Pear is a pale yellowish-red and is remarkable for its smoothness and eveness of texture which makes it excellent for turning and carving, but its main use in cabinet making is for inlay and marquetry.
