Ebony

This very dark, almost black wood with very deep brown markings showing in some pieces, and the smoothness of surface and finely polished appearance obtainable has caused ebony to be highly esteemed for many purposes. These include piano keys, cabinet handles, and ornamental cabinet and inlay work.

Macassar Ebony ranges in colour from dark brown to black, and a large proportion of logs are streaked with yellow or yellowish brown which produce handsomely figured veneer. Such veneer is sort after for high class cabinet work and specially commissioned pieces.
