MARIANNE STRAUB – A DESIGNER’S DESIGNER

Arriving in Bradford in 1932 to study power weaving, Swiss-born Marianne Straub (1909-1994) was to become one of Britain’s most influential designer/weavers. This talk is a chance to glimpse the creative output of a handweaver committed to well-made mass-produced textiles, one who remained active until her return to Switzerland in 1992.

TALK: Abram Games 60 Years of Design

Abram Games was one of the 20th century’s most important graphic designers.  His career spanned 60 years, and during the Second World War, he was uniquely appointed Official War Poster Artist, designing over 100 posters.  Postwar, he created posters for London Transport, Guinness, the Financial Times and the British Overseas Airways Corporation.  He designed the first animated ident for BBC television, the covers of Penguin Books and the emblems for the 1951 Festival of Britain and the Queen’s Award to Industry.  Games also created postage stamps issued in Britain, Jersey and Israel.  The length of Games’ career makes his work a striki

Talk: “Product or Service” by Jeremy Broun and Andrew Lawton on Friday 21st June

Jeremy Broun and Andrew Lawton are award-winning furniture designer makers based in Bath and the Peak District respectively.

Talk on Friday 5 April 2019: ‘Living in all the tenses’ – design and craft in the work of Ernest Gimson by Mary Greensted

Ernest Gimson – architect, designer of furniture and metalwork, chairmaker, plasterworker, and two-dimensional designer – was one of the leading figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. His work was rooted in English traditions and has been a continuing source of inspiration for designers and makers up to the present day. This talk will look at the development of Gimson’s work and provide an introduction into the range of his work and his impact on 20th- and 21st-century furniture design.

Mary Greensted was a curator at Cheltenham and is now a trustee at Court Barn. She has written widely on the Arts and Crafts Movement. She has co-authored Ernest Gimson: Arts and Crafts Designer and Architect which will be published by Yale University Press in October 2019.

The Victorian House of Arts and Crafts

The BBC have brought back to life a late 1800s Victorian arts and crafts commune in the Welsh hills in this series currently showing on BBC2.  We follow a group of 21st-century crafters as they experience the highs and lows of living and working together as a creative commune. Over their month-long stay they are set to renovate four of the key rooms in the house.   The projects have been set by Arts & Crafts expert Patch Rogers and internationally renowned potter Keith Brymer Jones
